Code of Ethics

The CMA Code of Ethics, arguably the most important document ever produced by the CMA, has undergone many revisions since its creation in 1868.

Last revised in 2004, the Code of Ethics provides an ethical framework for Canadian physicians, residents and medical students. Focus areas include: decision-making, consent, privacy, confidentiality, research and physician responsibilities.

The code is updated every 5-6 years and has a major revision approximately every 20 years. Changes must be approved by General Council.
