CMA members have free access to a $395 clinical tool

The CMA is reminding members that their membership provides much more than access to financial services, a subscription to CMAJ and a strong advocacy voice on the federal stage.

"The Internet has made it possible for us to deliver some truly marvelous clinical tools to physicians, and we want to encourage every member to make use of them," says CMA CEO Paul-Émile Cloutier.

One of these "clinical gifts for members" is DynaMed, a point-of-care tool that has been one of the association's most popular clinical tools since its introduction more than two years ago.

In collaboration with McMaster University's Health Information Research Unit, DynaMed provides daily systematic surveillance of more than 500 journals and then updates over 3,200 medical topic summaries. A recent BMJ study found that DynaMed is "markedly quicker" than its competitors in updating its clinical information, and it also ranked highest in a Journal of Clinical Epidemiology study of clinical decision-support tools.

It is available on the Web via cma.ca, or as an app for the iPhone or iPad, or for Android or BlackBerry devices; members seeking sign-up assistance or their free DynaMed app serial number can contact the CMA's Member Service Centre, cmamsc@cma.ca or 888 855-2555.

DynaMed, which costs $395 annually if purchased individually, is included in the CMA's membership benefits. "It's a valuable, evidence-based tool that can be used in the office or at the bedside, and we encourage members to make use of it," says CMA President Louis Hugo Francescutti.

Many members already have. "DynaMed is my go-to clinical reference tool for synthesized clinical information," says plastic surgeon Dr. Jeff Blushke of Saskatoon. "The mobile app and website are efficient and user friendly."

Francescutti noted that DynaMed is but one of six point-of-care tools the CMA makes available to members. The others are:

  • MD Consult
  • ACP Pier
  • Lexicomp drug information
  • Essential Evidence Plus
  • MedCalc 3000

Members can access a series of brief videos and the CMA website to learn more about the suite of clinical resources included in their CMA membership.
