Monica Branigan, MD, MHSc (Bioethics)


Monica is the faculty lead, ethics and professionalism, Department of Family and Community Medicine, University of Toronto. With close to 30 years in practice, she has had a rich clinical experience, including rural, urban, geriatric, student health and palliative care settings. Having acquired a master's degree in bioethics at the Joint Centre for Bioethics at the University of Toronto in 2002, she became a clinician educator.

She is an associate professor and teaches extensively at the undergraduate, postgraduate and faculty development level around issues of ethics and professionalism, as well as palliative care. Her particular interest lies in facilitating collegial conversations that actively explore how to make skilful ethical and professional decisions in complex situations. In her current clinical role, she is the Medical Director of the Palliative and Supportive Care Service at St Joseph's Health Centre in Toronto.


Jamie Campbell, MEd, BEd, BA(Hon)


Jamie Campbell is Director of Organization Development at North York General Hospital, Toronto, Ontario. He has over 20 years' experience working with individuals, groups and organizations in facilitating learning, change and growth in the healthcare sector. Building on his background as an educator, presenter and facilitator of change processes in both the private and public sectors, his current duties include overseeing a dynamic team responsible for leadership and talent management, non-clinical training, strategic and continuous planning support, and enhancing organizational culture. Jamie is a member of the Canadian Society of Training & Development, the Human Resources Professionals Association of Ontario, the Association for Creative Change in Organization Renewal and Development and is a former executive member of the National Staff Development Council Ontario chapter.


Chris Carruthers, BSC, MD, MBA, FRCS, FAAOS, ICD.D


Dr. Christopher Carruthers was born and raised in Sarnia, Ontario.

He is a graduate of Carleton University (BSc.), the University of Ottawa (MD), and Concordia University’s Executive MBA program.

For most of his career he practiced orthopedic surgery at The Ottawa Hospital. Today he is a corporate director and a consultant working with health care and similar organizations. Recently he has planned and participated in workshops to help physicians in planning their transition into an encore career.

He was the previous Chief of Staff of The Ottawa Hospital. In 2013 he was appointed for 10 months interim Chief of Staff of Bruyère Continuing Care.

He is a founder and the first president of The Canadian Society of Physician Executives.

He is presently a director of several boards. These include Carleton University (Vice-Chair) , Ottawa International Airport Authority (Chair, Humans Resources committee) , and Mach-Gaensslen Foundation (Chair) .

He is a past director of several boards including; Canadian Blood Services, Accreditation Canada. The Ottawa Hospital, The Ontario Hospital Association, Ottawa Flying Club and Ashbury College. He is a past Chair of the Ashbury College Board and Ashbury College Foundation.

Dr. Carruthers has completed the Directors Education Program sponsored by the Institute of Corporate Directors and is a certified director of the Institute of Corporate Directors.

Scott Comber, MBA, MA, PhD


Before co-founding the leadership development and change management firm Shift, Scott amassed more than 20 years' experience in the financial, IT and health care fields. He is director of MBA programs and an assistant professor in business administration at Dalhousie University, Halifax. In-house leadership development initiatives and conflict resolution are specialties, along with change and relationship management expertise and creating value-based workplaces. Action-oriented and practical, Scott also works as an executive coach, and sometimes as an associate faculty member in a corporate residency MBA program.


Jim Cross, MD


After graduating from the College of Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan, Jim entered emergency medicine in 1974. He was a chief of emergency medicine for over 16 years, a VP medicine for a regional health authority in Saskatchewan for over six years and medical director for Saskatchewan Air Ambulance for 18 years. Jim is currently the Senior Medical Officer for the Prince Albert Parkland Health Region and teaches emergency medicine in the rural family medicine program at the Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert.

Jim teaches management dynamics and brings a wealth of experience to his courses. He claims to have vast experience in how not to lead, and is happy to share his unhappy personal experiences with anyone who will listen.


Graham Dickson, PhD


Graham Dickson is professor emeritus at Royal Roads University and still teaches there. He was the founding director of the Centre for Health Leadership and Research. His specialty is leadership development and succession planning within the health sector.

Graham was the principal investigator in the cross-Canada research project on the LEADS in a Caring Environment framework, which is being used to define the standards of effective health systems leadership in many jurisdictions. This framework has been endorsed by the Health Care Leaders’ Association of British Columbia, the Canadian College of Health Leaders and the Canadian Health Leadership Network, which comprises more than 32 national and provincial health organizations, including the Canadian Medical Association. Recently, Graham oversaw the writing and publishing of a set of five booklets dedicated to each of the capabilities of the LEADS framework and co-authored the booklet on Systems Transformation.

Graham is academic advisor on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Health Leadership Network and a member of the Physician Assistants Certification Council of Canada.


Paul Farnan, MD, BCh, CCFP, FCFP, ASAM & CSAM certified


Paul is a partner with HealthQuest Occupational Health Corporation, advising organizations and industries on the health of their employees, especially complex disability management and substance abuse policy development. He has additional certification in addiction medicine and is a clinical associate professor in the department of family practice at the University of British Columbia. While he was executive director of the provincial physician health program, Paul had particular interest in conflict and tensions that exist at the interface of clinical and administrative medicine.

Past chair of the Canadian Physician Health Network and a member of the expert advisory committee for the CMA's Centre for Physician Health and Well-being, Paul is a regular presenter at workshops and conferences addressing the resilience and sustainability of the healthcare workforce. Workplace concerns such as collaborative practice, drug and alcohol abuse, disability management and healthcare professionals who demonstrate disruptive behaviour are key interests.


Mamta Gautam, MD, MBA, FRCPC, CCPE


Mamta Gautam is a psychiatrist, executive coach, author, consultant, speaker, and President of PEAK MD, Inc., a company that specializes in Leadership Resilience, and keeping well professionals well. Her two main areas of expertise are Physician Health and Physician Leadership.

Dr. Gautam is a pioneer in the field of Physician Health and Wellbeing. An Assistant Professor at the University Of Ottawa Faculty Of Medicine, she has worked as a psychiatrist in Ottawa, Canada for over 25 years. Hailed as the "The Doctors' Doctor", physicians are the focus of her practice. Dr. Gautam founded the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Medicine Wellness Program, which served as the template for Canadian Medical Association Center for Physician Health and Wellbeing. In 2008, she founded the International Alliance on Physician Health, realizing her dream of bringing together experts worldwide to collaborate on work in this area. Currently, she serves on the University of Ottawa ePhysician Health Advisory Committee, and the RCPSC Physician Health Working Group. She is leading a new initiative to create a regional physician wellness program to serve all physicians working in the Champlain LHIN in Ontario.

Dr. Gautam is also a recognized leader in medicine in Canada. She is a Past-President of the Federation of Medical Women of Canada, and a past President of the Ontario Psychiatric Association. She is on the faculty on several Physician Leadership Development courses in Canada and the US, and serves as a coach for physician executives, assisting them with leadership development and career transitions. Dr. Gautam is an internationally renowned public speaker, and a sought-after keynote speaker at medical conferences throughout Canada, United States, Europe and Australia. She has created and conducted over 1000 innovative seminars, and is the recipient of numerous awards for her pioneering work in physician health and physician leadership development.


Brian Golden, BS, MS, PhD


Brian is the Sandra Rotman Chair in Health Sector Strategy and professor of strategic management, Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto. He holds a joint appointment in the faculty of medicine and is founding executive director of the Collaborative for Health Sector Strategy - a policy, research and leadership development institute funded by the Ontario health ministry.

He holds a BS degree in economics from Oberlin College, Oberlin, Ohio, and an MS degree and PhD in organization behaviour from Northwestern University (Kellogg School of Management, Evanston, Ill.). Brian conducts research in the areas of strategic change and implementation, health system integration and sustainability, hospital boards, organizational strategy and leadership. From 2005 to 2010, he was board chair of the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences. His advising and executive education clients in the health sector include the office of Ontario's Premier, Ontario's Ministry of Health, Britain's National Health Service and provinces across Canada as part of CIHR's "Best Brains" advisory program. He is a 2004 recipient of the national Ted Freedman Innovation in Education Award.


Anne Grant, LLB, LLM (ADR), CMed


Anne helps individuals and organizations manage conflict and resolve disputes as a member of the firm Mediated Solutions. Qualified in nursing, law and mediation, Anne holds the national designation of Chartered Mediator, and obtained her master's-in-law in Alternative Dispute Resolution from Osgoode Hall Law School. Anne was the recipient of the Ontario Bar Association annual Award of Excellence in Alternative Dispute Resolution in 2007 and received an Excellence in Teaching Award from the University of Toronto in 2003.

In addition to teaching extensively, Anne is co-author of A Nurse's Practical Guide to the Law (1997) and author of Dispute Resolution in the Insurance Industry (2001). Her experience includes mediation of civil and labour disputes, as well as facilitation related to poisoned work environment issues and human rights investigation in the health care setting.


Janice Gross Stein, PhD, FRSC, LLD, MOC


Janice is the Belzberg Professor of Conflict Management in the department of political science and the director of the Munk Centre for International Studies, Toronto. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and author of more than 80 books, book chapters and articles on intelligence, international security, peacemaking and public policy and negotiation processes. Recent publications she has written or contributed to include: Networks of Knowledge: Collaborative Innovation in International Learning (2001); The Cult of Efficiency (2001); Street Protests and Fantasy Parks (2001), and the prize-winning The Unexpected War: Canada in Kandahar (2007).

She has received the Mershon Prize for outstanding contribution to public education on issues of national security. Janice has also been active as a member of international advisory panels including the Committee on International Conflict Resolution of the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, DC, and the Committee on International Security of the American Academy of Sciences. She has served as chair of the research advisory board to Canada's minister of foreign affairs and as a member of that ministry's Middle East advisory group, and often provides news commentary for CBC and TVO television.


Jeffrey Hoch, PhD


Jeffrey received his PhD in health economics from the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. He also holds a master's in economics from Johns Hopkins University and a bachelor of arts degree in quantitative economics and decision sciences from the University of California at San Diego. He has taught health economics and economic evaluation classes in Canada, the United States and internationally.

Currently, Jeffrey is pursuing research on how to make health economics more useful to decision-makers. Special interests include health services research related to cancer and mental health and other health issues affecting poor and vulnerable populations. Jeffrey is an award-winning teacher and is the recipient of a Career Scientist Award from the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.


Gillian Kernaghan, MD, CCFP, FCFP


Dr. Kernaghan was appointed the President and Chief Executive Officer of St. Joseph's Health Care, London in 2010. St. Joseph’s is a multi-sited academic health care organization serving London and region. Prior to assuming this role, she served for 17 years as the Vice President, Medical for various hospitals in London. In 1984, Gillian joined the medical staff of St. Joseph's, Parkwood Hospital and LHSC as a family physician. She completed her residency at St. Joseph’s Hospital in 1984 upon graduation from University of Western Ontario and was awarded her Fellowship in 2000. She is an Associate Professor at Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry and an adjunct professor in the Arthur Labatt Family School of Nursing at Western University. Gillian currently serves on the OHA Board and the CAHO Executive. Gillian is the Past President of the Canadian Society of Physician Executives (2010-2012) and a past Board Member of CaRMS. She serves on numerous provincial and national committees. She is also a faculty member of the Physician Management Institute of Canadian Medical Association.


Peter Kuling, BSc, MSc, MD, CCFP, FCFP, CCPE


Peter Kuling is an Assistant Professor of Family Medicine, University of Ottawa.  He works with The Ottawa Hospital Academic Family Health Team (TOHAFHT) where he has served as both Lead Physician and Unit Director of the TOHAFHT.

Peter acquired extensive experience in the political environment as President, Saskatchewan Medical Association and through an extended term as Chair of the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) Political Action Committee (PAC).  He also served as Chair of several related CMA advocacy committees. As PAC Chair, he championed the MD-MP Contact Program, the CMA's grassroots lobbying initiative, which has been effective in influencing public policy on health care. He oversaw successful campaigns to ban tobacco advertising at sporting and cultural events and to obtain increased funding for health care. He remains an active supporter of the MD-MP Contact Program and is also involved in the professional development of physicians as lobbyists.

As a faculty member of the Joule/CMA Physician Leadership Institute (PLI) and of the Ontario College of Family Physicians, Peter delivers a range of advocacy, leadership and best practice programs. An Expert Advisor for Accreditation Canada International, he also delivers leadership and quality improvement education sessions internationally. 

A strong advocate for Family Medicine as a critical component of health care in both Canada and abroad, Peter has lectured in Family Medicine and Continuous Quality Improvement at the University of Fukui, Fukui City, Japan and was a visiting scholar in primary care departments at universities in The Netherlands and New Zealand. He serves as Co-Lead, Family Medicine Demonstration Project, Ottawa-Shanghai Joint School of Medicine.

Peter has attained the designation of Canadian Certified Physician Executive awarded by the Canadian Society of Physician Leaders and the CMA.  He has also completed the Advanced Health Leadership Program (AHLP) at the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto including the AHLP London Study Tour, London, England.


Martin Lees, MD, MSA, PhD, FCCHL, CCPE, CPHQ


Martin Lees has a master's degree in health care administration and a PhD in management and decision sciences. He is a Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality and has earned certification as a Fellow of the EXTRA program and Fellowship in the Canadian College of Health Leaders as well as the CCPE. His clinical work has been in primary care as an emergency medicine physician and urgent care practitioner. He has held adjunct faculty appointments at two medical schools in Ontario.

Martin has extensive leadership experience in hospitals and health care systems and has been a member of the board of directors of five hospital corporations. He has been active in many task forces and project groups for government and healthcare agencies.

Martin's consulting work focuses on change management, organizational development and strategic planning. He has published several articles in peer-reviewed publications and served as a member of the editorial board of Healthcare Management Forum. Martin is a faculty member at two business schools where he teaches in the areas of leadership, organizational change and development, corporate governance and strategy.


Susan J. Lieff, MD, MEd, MMan, FRCPC


Susan is a professor and the vice-chair, education in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto. She is the director of academic leadership development for the Centre for Faculty Development, Faculty of Medicine at St Michael's Hospital and the associate director of the Research, Innovation and Scholarship in Education (RISE) program of the Department of Psychiatry. Susan has been practising geriatric psychiatry at Baycrest since 1985. She has a master's degree in education and an international master's in health leadership.

Susan's scholarship focuses on the design and evaluation of leadership development programs for health professional educators, academics and practitioners. She has been widely recognized for her excellence in teaching and innovative program development. She has been a faculty member for numerous leadership programs, including those of the Canadian Leadership Institute in Medical Education. She also co-chaired the development of the 2009 Royal College of Physician and Surgeons "train the trainer" program for the CanMEDs manager role.


Ian  McKillop, PhD


Ian is a public health professor at the University of Waterloo, where he also serves as the university's executive director for health research. He works in information management, with a particular interest in how technology can be used to support decision-making by clinical providers and health care mangers. Lately, Ian has been exploring this issue in the context of pandemic planning and incident response strategies.

Ian's work on funding and financial reporting in health care has contributed to several commissions and reports, including the Romanow and Clair (Québec) reports. Ian has served on a community hospital board, is an adjunct scientist with the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES) and is affiliated with the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine.


Louise McNaughton-Filion, MD CM, FCFP(EM), CCPE


Dr. McNaughton-Filion received her medical degree at McGill University and completed her residency at the University of Toronto, and is a Canadian Certified Physician Executive. She has practiced emergency and family medicine in both rural and urban settings.

Dr. McNaughton-Filion has been involved in national, provincial and local initiatives to improve emergency care. An investigating and inquest coroner for many years, she held many positions in the Ontario Coroners Association Executive, including that of President.

She has held multiple administrative posts, including Chief of the Montfort ED; Assistant Chief of Staff Quality of Care at the Montfort Hospital, and Champlain Local Health Integration Network ED Lead. She holds an academic post at the University of Ottawa. In 2010, she was the Senior Medical Advisor for the Internationally Protected Persons (IPP) program for the G8 and G20 summits, and continues to consult with the IPP program for Health Canada.

Dr. McNaughton-Filion now has an administrative post with the provincial government.


Paul  Mohapel, PhD


Paul wears many hats: consultant, lecturer, educator, researcher, facilitator. After receiving his doctorate in psychology from the University of Victoria, BC, he worked as a neuroscience researcher for several years at Lund University Hospital in Sweden, before returning to Canada to pursue a master's in leadership and training at Royal Roads University, Victoria.

Today, Paul uses his extensive knowledge of the brain, psychology and leadership to design and facilitate workshops in organizational development, and to lecture at several universities in leadership, business and psychology programs. He consults with organizations on individual and organizational emotional intelligence enhancement, leadership development, talent management and team effectiveness.


Monica  Olsen, BScN, BA, MHRD


Monica is an organization effectiveness consultant and a long-standing member of the PMI faculty. Her expertise in management, facilitation, leadership development and workplace diversity has been tapped by many public and private organizations. She is qualified to administer both the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® and the BarOn Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQ-i)® - and to facilitate Insights® Discovery and Personality Dimensions® workshops.

Monica brings insight, inspiration and humour to her consulting and training practice. She is recognized as a sensitive and effective facilitator, promoting self-awareness and personal change that can lead to enhanced working relationships.


Katherine  Stevenson, BScPT, MSc


Katherine Stevenson has worked in health care improvement since 2004. From 2004 to 2009, she worked with Saskatchewan’s Health Quality Council (HQC) in a variety of positions, including Senior Quality Improvement Consultant and Program Director. She is currently a doctoral student and adjunct lecturer at the University of Jonkoping, Clinical Assistant Professor for the School of Physical Therapy at the University of Saskatchewan, and a physical therapist with the Rural and Remote Memory Clinic at the Canadian Centre for Health and Safety in Agriculture. In 2012, Katherine launched her own business, the Groundwork Strategy, where she provides teaching, coaching, and facilitation to individuals, teams, and organizations wanting to work with technical and relational approaches to improvement in health, education, and social care.

Katherine’s areas of research and work focus include coaching and facilitation, quality improvement education, interprofessional education, health information management and technology, leadership, and system redesign.

Katherine holds a B.A. Honours in English (1996), a B.Sc. in Physical Therapy (1999), and a M.Sc. in Community Health and Epidemiology (2003), all from the University of Saskatchewan.


Gautham  Suresh, MBBS, MD, DM, MS


Gautham Suresh is a Professor of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas and a neonatologist and Medical Director of the Newborn Center at Texas Children's Hospital. He is a graduate of the Masters Program at The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice (previously called the Center for Evaluative Clinical Sciences) where his concentration was Continuous Quality Improvement in Healthcare. After his fellowship in neonatology at the University of Vermont, he served as a faculty member there and was a postgraduate fellow at the Vermont Oxford Network. He has worked closely with the Vermont Oxford Network for many years, as a faculty member of the Vermont Oxford Network's quality improvement collaborative, the Neonatal Intensive Care Quality (NICQ) project, and as an advisory board member for NICQ. He has set up and directed educational courses on patient safety, on evidence-based medicine and on the ACGME core competencies for medical students, pediatric residents, and neonatology fellows. He is the director for a course on patient safety at The Dartmouth Institute. He is the author of several peer reviewed scientific publications, presentations and book chapters on quality improvement, patient safety and evidence-based medicine, including Cochrane systematic reviews. He is currently conducting research on and teaches about Patient Safety and medical errors. He currently serves as the chair of the Planning Group of the American Academy of Pediatrics program, Education in Quality Improvement for Pediatric Practice (EQIPP). He is also an Associate Editor for the Neonatal Review Group of the Cochrane Collaboration. His interests include patient safety, healthcare quality improvement, evidence-based decision making, cost-effectiveness analysis, translation of research into practice, and organizational culture and leadership in healthcare.


Gaétan  Tardif, MD, FRCPC, FCCHSE


Gaétan is a Physiatrist and full time health care executive at the University Health Network (Toronto Rehab) with leadership experience in several professional and not-for-profit organizations. He is a Past-President of the Canadian Society of Physician Executives and the Canadian Association of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. He has a keen interest in Patient Safety and Patient Engagement in Heath Care.

Outside of the hospital, Gaétan has also participated in each of the last eight Paralympic Games and was elected President and Chair of the Board of the Canadian Paralympic Committee in 2013 shortly after serving as Chef de Mission for the 2012 London Paralympic Games.


Kevin Tasa, BCOMM, MSC., PHD.


Kevin is an Associate Professor of Organizational Behaviour at the Schulich School of Business, York University. Prior to joining Schulich he was an Associate Professor, and Director of the MBA program, at the DeGroote School of Business, McMaster University. He holds an MSc. in Health Administration and received his doctorate from the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto. Recently, his research has focused on ethical influences on negotiator behavior and the transfer of negotiation skills back to the workplace. He is also on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Organizational Behavior and teaches courses in Managerial Negotiation and Organizational Behavior at the masters and doctoral levels. In 2008 he was awarded the Basu Teaching Award by the MBA student association at McMaster and in 2012 and 2013 was nominated for the Sydney Schulich MBA Award for Teaching Excellence. Finally, he is a co-author of Essentials of Negotiation, first published in 2011 and now the most widely used negotiation textbook in Canadian business schools.

Joshua Tepper,  MD, FCFP, MPH, MBA


Dr. Tepper is a family physician and the President and Chief Executive Officer of Health Quality Ontario (HQO). An arm’s length agency of the provincial government, HQO works in partnership with Ontario’s health care system to support a better experience of care, better outcomes for Ontarians and better value for money

Prior to HQO, Dr. Tepper was the inaugural Vice President of Education at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.  As Vice President, he was responsible for Sunnybrook’s educational strategy and programming for learners, physicians and staff, patients and their families and the community.  Prior to joining Sunnybrook, Dr. Tepper was Assistant Deputy Minister (ADM) in the Health Human Resources Strategy Division of the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.  As the ADM he led the HealthForceOntario health human resources strategy to ensure that Ontarians have access to the right number and mix of qualified health care providers, now and in the future.

In addition to his involvement in health policy and research at the provincial level, Dr. Tepper has also been active on a national scale as the senior medical officer for Health Canada, an adjunct scientist at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES), and a research consultant for the Canadian Institute of Health Information (CIHI). He has received several provincial and national awards for his leadership in these positions.

Dr. Tepper has always remained in active practice serving marginalized populations and taking on clinical leadership roles.  He has served as the Medical Director for the Inner City Health Associates and President of the Inner City Family Health Team.  He was also previously the Vice-President of the Society of Rural Physicians. 

Dr. Tepper holds a degree in Public Policy from Duke University, a Masters of Public Health from Harvard, and recently completed his executive Masters of Business Administration at the Richard Ivey School of Business.


John  Van Aerde, MD, MA, PHD, FRCPC


John has 25 years of experience as a Neonatologist, the first 10 as a clinician-researcher, the next 15 in different leadership roles, including medical director of several neonatal intensive care units, the Pediatric Home Nutrition Program for Northern Alberta, the neonatal initiative for Collaborative Practice and Quality Improvement and, Regional director of the Northern Alberta Neonatal Intensive Care Program. Under his leadership and with the support of a large team, the latter program integrated 115 neonatal beds and one follow-up clinic in 5 different hospitals under one functional umbrella. After Alberta, he also served for a few years as Regional Medical Director for Neonatology at Fraser Health in BC. He is a Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at the Universities of Alberta and BC, and Associate Faculty for the Master’s Program in Health Leadership at Royal Roads University in Victoria, BC. He served on many committees for regional, provincial and national organizations, including the Alberta Clinician Council, Faculty of Medicine at the University of Alberta, the Canadian Paediatric Society and, presently, as the President of the Canadian Society for Physician Executives.

John holds a PhD in Medical Sciences, a Master’s degree in Leadership Studies and has published >70 peer-reviewed papers, 20 book chapters and 140 abstracts. He has 20 years of medico-legal experience and has provided/continues to provide consulting services for many academic and health care organizations. Presently, he is the editor of the Canadian Journal of Physician Leadership and researches several aspects of physician leadership. John practices systems theory by living in a self-sustainable house and by exploring forest regeneration, while his wife grows year-round organic food.


Kishore  Visvanathan, MD, FRCSC


Kishore is a graduate of the College of Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan, where he is now clinical associate professor of surgery. Since 1992, he has practised urology in Saskatoon and is head of the Division of Urology for the Saskatoon Health Region.

Kishore's interests are quality improvement and clinical practice redesign. He leads Saskatoon Urology Associates' Advanced Access project - an initiative to improve access to specialist consultation. He is also clinical lead for the Health Quality Council's Chronic Disease Management Collaborative. Kishore teaches the principles and application of health care quality improvement to health care students and professionals at the University of Saskatchewan, and in conferences across Canada.

Frank  Wagner, BA, MA, MHSc (Bioethics)


Frank Wagner is a Bioethicist with the Joint Centre for Bioethics, and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine, University of Toronto. Frank is also a faculty member of the Canadian Medical Associations’ Physician Management Institute (PMI). He holds degrees in physical anthropology (BA) and medical anthropology (MA), and is a graduate of the MHSc program in Medical Ethics at the University of Toronto.

Frank is also deeply involved in health care management and policy in Ontario. He was the founding Bioethicist and a member of the Senior Leadership Team at the Toronto Central Community Care Access Centre (CCAC). He completed a nine year term as a Trustee of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, was chair of its Patient Care Committee, Chair of the Selection Committee for Chief, Musculoskeletal Program, and Chair of the Selection Committee for Chief, Family and Community Medicine. He is the ethicist on the Health Quality Ontario (HQO) Ontario Health Technology Advisory Committee (OHTAC), which provides advice to the Ontario Ministry of Health regarding the uptake, diffusion, and distribution of new health technologies. He is also Chair of OHTAC’s Public Engagement Subcommittee, was Chair of the Provincial Expert Panel on Celiac Disease, and a member of the Provincial Expert Panel on Epilepsy. He is also a member of the Law Commission of Ontario’s advisory committee on legal issues impacting seniors in Ontario.


Mary  Yates, MEd


Mary has spent more than 25 years in the business of helping individuals and organizations through the change process. She is director of the Physician Workplace Support Program, a unique service offered through the Physician Health Program of the Ontario Medical Association. Her expertise is in the area of leadership development, team effectiveness, performance management, meeting and retreat facilitation, human resources management, curriculum design and quality improvement. Prior to joining the OMA, Mary was director of organization development/quality workLife at York Central Hospital in Richmond Hill, Ontario, where she provided leadership for initiatives related to learning, organizational transformation and improving quality of work life for staff.
