Healthy Canadians Grants

Healthy Canadians Grants are designed to provide support for community-run initiatives that:

  • improve the quality of life for patients and vulnerable populations living in those communities; and
  • have a positive impact on the community as a whole and the lives of Canadians.

The CMA, in partnership with the CMA Foundation, is committed to supporting innovative, grassroots health initiatives. Physicians, medical learners, patients and the public all benefit when communities can deliver highly valued programs. Investing in these programs is one way the CMA and the CMA Foundation can build towards our vision of a vibrant profession and a healthy population.

Theme for 2018: seniors’ wellness

Different themes will be identified as part of the Healthy Canadians Grants criteria. These themes will target issues that have a significant impact on health in Canada. The theme for 2018 is seniors’ wellness. With these grants, we’re aiming to make a tangible difference in the lives of seniors, their families, and the physicians who care for them.

Some examples of initiatives that fit within this theme are:

  • Exercise programs geared toward seniors
  • Programs to help seniors remain in their homes (e.g., meal preparation, cleaning services, assistance with shopping and other chores)
  • Social programs aimed at getting seniors active in the community (e.g., clubs and social outings)
  • Transportation programs
  • Friendly visits for socially isolated seniors
  • Programs in seniors’ residences and nursing homes (e.g., companion animal visits)
  • Respite programs for families caring for seniors (e.g., day programs for seniors with dementia)

The 2018 application deadline has now passed. Thank you to everyone who applied. Grant recipients will be announced in the coming months.

Who is eligible to apply?

Applicants must be a registered charity in Canada and all applications must be accompanied by a letter of support from a local physician endorsing the proposal. The application should demonstrate how the initiative will make a tangible difference in the community. Click here to find out more information on eligibility and grant application procedures.

How will grant recipients be selected?

Grant applications will be carefully reviewed by the CMA Foundation’s Grant Disbursement Committee (GDC). In addition to CMA Foundation requirements, the GDC will evaluate applications based on their fit with the identified theme, their impact on the community and their long-term feasibility.
