Measuring Wait One

One major problem regarding access to specialty care — often overlooked — is the wait time for the first visit with the specialist. This is known as "Wait One."

Limited data exist to enable accurate measurement of this time period, but the value of this information is widely acknowledged. For example, it can be used as a benchmark for evaluating the success of any project aimed at improving referral processes. This data also provides a more accurate picture of the patient's total wait for specialty care.

New processes are emerging to facilitate "Wait One" data collection.
