CMA Health Summit
The CMA will host its inaugural Health Summit in Winnipeg, August 20 & 21, 2018, to spark a national conversation about disruptive innovation and how we prepare and embrace a future of better health.
The CMA Health Summit will challenge your thinking, help you build an innovation mindset, and equip you to lead change. Meet and engage with more than 25 speakers and panelists, and hundreds of attendees. Plan to attend 3 days of intensive and inspiring dialogue about the medical profession and health care in Canada. Supporting collaboration: New CMA Communities of Interest Grants
The CMA has launched a new initiative that you will want your members to be aware of, called the CMA Communities of Interest Grants program.
The goal is to enable groups of members to foster and grow communities in ways that are authentic and applicable to the medical community, and to enable existing communities to expand in scale and scope.
The CMA Communities of Interest Grants program will award up to four (4) grants of up to $5,000 each and one (1) grant of up to $10,000 per year to CMA member applicants to support communities working collaboratively to address issues affecting the health care system, the profession and/or patients. In addition to funding, the CMA will provide grant recipients with strategic advice, community management coaching and communications support — at the CMA’s discretion — to support the community.
The deadline for applications is May 31, 2018.

New Provincial/Territorial & Municipal Collaboration team
The CMA has established a new Provincial/Territorial & Municipal Collaboration (PTMC) team within the Patient and Public Advocacy department. This new team is responsible for the CMA’s advocacy on pan-Canadian issues with provincial/territorial and municipal governments as well as the CMA’s new “advocacy through action” initiatives. Expect more updates from this team in the weeks and months ahead.

May 1st is National Physician Day in Canada!
The CMA will celebrate and acknowledge NATIONAL PHYSICIAN DAY on May 1, 2018, seizing the opportunity to bring visibility to the work of the profession and to publicly express our sincere appreciation to our valued membership. As part of this communications and marketing effort, the CMA will run a targeted digital campaign in CHN.ca/PS.ca; eNews; google display network, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. A statement by our President, Dr. Marcoux will be issued and featured prominently on the CMA website. Finally, we will profile up to 3 physicians as illustration of the work undertaken by the profession in support of patients and communities in which care is provided. These videos and short articles will also be featured on our website, and in social media channels.
You will be interested to note that an Act was tabled in the Senate last week calling for May 1st to be designated National Physician Day in Canada. We are pleased by this development in the Senate and we anticipate that an official proclamation will be achieved in this session of parliament.

The CMA and federal tax reform
When the federal government first announced a series of changes to the small business tax regime in July 2017, the CMA immediately responded — working with its members to highlight the potential impacts on individual physicians, the medical profession and the health care system.
On February 27, as part of its 2018 federal budget, the government announced what appear to be the final version of their small business tax changes. Thanks in large part to the efforts of the CMA and its members, they abandoned their original proposal and adopted a more nuanced approach — significantly better than what was first put forward.
As the legislation moves through Parliament, the CMA is remaining engaged on this file. We’re continuing to partner with the Coalition for Small Business Tax Fairness in calling for further changes, and we will keep our members informed of new developments moving forward.
DemandaPlan.ca wins second industry award
On February 26, Demand a Plan won the 2018 Reed Award for Best Canadian Website. The new DemandaPlan.ca went live in the fall of 2017. Since then, the campaign has accrued over 10,000 new supporters, for a total of 63,635 supporters. The Reed Awards are an annual event hosted by Campaigns & Elections magazine. They honour top campaigns and teams in the political and public affairs industry. This is the second time the Demand a Plan campaign has won a Reed award — having also won in 2016.
