Dr. Avery attends Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association’s member’s forum in Gander
CMA President Dr. Granger Avery was invited to attend the April 7 Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association (NLMA) Board meeting in Gander. Dr. Avery shared with the Board of Directors CMA insight on issues such as medical assistance in dying, the opioid crisis, legalization and regulation of marijuana, medical professionalism and Choosing Wisely Canada. Dr. Avery and the CMA delegation were also graciously invited to participate in a small town hall organized by the NLMA. The meeting allowed local physicians to discuss issues impacting their practices. This meeting was part of the NLMA’s continued efforts to connect with local members on hot topics and to share their board activities.
Parliamentary reception honouring the CMA’s 150th anniversary
On the evening of April 11, Speaker of the Senate George Furey hosted the CMA along with the presidents and CEOs of the PTMAs to celebrate the CMA’s 150th anniversary. The reception was a great success; many notable Parliamentarians were in attendance, including the Minister of Health, Dr. Jane Philpott, and Dr. Carolyn Bennett, the Minister of Indigenous and Northern Affairs. Geoff Regan, Speaker of the House of Commons, the deputy speaker Bruce Stanton, numerous Senators and health committee members also attended. CMA and PTMA representatives networked with the Parliamentarians and the CMA was recognized for its long, important history and its contributions to the delivery of health care services in Canada.
The CMA’s response to Bills C-45 & C-46: Protecting health of Canadians must be job one for federal marijuana legislation
On April 13 the federal government tabled Bills C-45 and C-46, which will legalize recreational marijuana and strictly regulate its use. As the bills are currently written, the legal age for consuming marijuana in Canada will be 18, in contrast to the CMA’s recommended age of 21. In its response to the announcement of the bills, the CMA reiterated its longstanding concerns about the health risks associated with consuming marijuana, which it originally presented to the Task Force on Marijuana Legalization and Regulation in a submission last August. The submission highlighted the particular risk to children and youth given their brains are undergoing rapid, extensive development.
