Come back to where it all began! CMA Québec City 2017: Register to join us

From Aug. 20-23, members will gather in Québec City to discuss, among others, the code of ethics and professionalism, innovation, and the next frontier for medical aid in dying. Be part of this historic meeting!

One step closer to a National Doctor’s Day

On May 2, Dr. Hedy Fry, Member of Parliament for Vancouver Centre and long-time CMA member, served notice of her intent to introduce a motion in the House of Commons to create a National Doctor’s Day. Ontario and Nova Scotia currently hold provincial celebrations each year on May 1, so Dr. Fry’s intervention is very timely. As the CMA celebrates its 150th anniversary this year, along with Canada, we look forward to the introduction of this new national day to recognize the efforts of physicians.

New national prescribing guideline for opioids now available

The negative impacts associated with prescription opioids represent a complex issue that requires a multi-faceted, multi-stakeholder response. To that end, the CMA is working to disseminate the updated national prescribing guideline for opioids as part of a pan-Canadian collaborative of medical organizations. This guideline is also available through an online app and will be supported by other tools such as continuing medical education. For a downloadable poster featuring the key points from the new guideline, please click here.

Update on Bill C-37 on safe injection sites

On May 9, Dr. Jeff Blackmer, the CMA’s vice-president of medical professionalism, appeared on CBC’s Power & Politics to discuss the CMA’s position on C-37 (An act to Amend the Controlled and Substances Act and to make related amendments to other Acts). The CMA urged the government to reject the amendments made by the Senate as they created further barriers to harm reduction and access. Shortly after this interview, Bill C-37 achieved Royal Assent on May 18. In the end, the CMA was satisfied with the government’s response to the amendments and we look forward to continued collaboration toward addressing the opioid crisis.

MP Serré’s M-106 passes in the House of Commons

MP Marc Serré’s private members’ motion to develop a national seniors strategy — inspired by the stories shared on Demand a Plan — was voted on and passed by MPs on May 22. Next, the Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development will begin a study examining how best to develop and implement this first-ever strategy for Canada, which will seek to improve quality of life for seniors and provide better support to caregivers.

Join the current Demand a Plan letter-writing campaign

The CMA and over 50,000 Demand a Plan supporters are pleased that Parliament has agreed to have MP Serré's motion on a national seniors strategy studied by the Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development. We’re urging Canadians to send a letter to their MP to continue to support his motion. It only takes a minute — please click here to participate and help us spread the word.

Conservative Party leadership convention

From May 26 to 27, the CMA manned the Demand a Plan booth at the Conservative Party leadership convention in Toronto. The convention saw the election of Andrew Scheer — Member of Parliament for Regina–Qu’Appelle and former Speaker of the House of Commons — as the party’s new leader, winning with only a 1 per cent difference over the perceived frontrunner Maxime Bernier. His campaign platform included the following three health care commitments:

  • ensuring tax-free health and dental plans;
  • leaving health care delivery to the provinces and territories; and
  • ensuring that provinces and territories can rely on federal health care funding.

CMA staff will be monitoring how the new leader follows through on his health care commitments. In the meantime, click here to read more about the candidates’ health platforms.
