Governance updates from the AGM

At the CMA’s AGM on Wednesday, August 22, members considered a package of proposed bylaw changes. Proposed changes to wind down General Council, restructure the nominations process and migrate elections from GC delegates to the general membership were not passed. Changes to the size and composition of the Board of Directors as well as a number of housekeeping changes were approved. The CMA will rely on attrition to reduce the size of the Board of Directors from 26 to 19 members, including one non-physician, by 2020.

Patient participation at the Health Summit

The CMA was proud to host 25 sponsored patients at its inaugural Health Summit. After reviewing hundreds of applications, the CMA offered travel and accommodation sponsorships to the top 25 applicants. The patients were asked to bring their unique lived experiences to the event and they delivered, networking with other attendees and contributing to discussions both in person and online (via Twitter and the Health Summit app). This month’s DemandaPlan.ca updates

This month on Demand a Plan, we welcomed the arrival of a new federal Minister of Seniors, Filomena Tassi. We launched a new letter-writing campaign to allow Demand a Plan supporters to thank the Prime Minister for creating this new position, with a copy of the letter also being sent to Minster Tassi and the supporter’s MP.

We’ve also been showcasing innovation in seniors care across the country, to complement the innovations featured at last month’s Health Summit.

CMA Patient Voice — Call for nominations now closed

We’re pleased to share that we received more than 500 applications for our new patient engagement group, the CMA Patient Voice. The results of the selection process will be announced in the fall. Given the strong interest in the program, the CMA will also be developing an online patient platform over the next year. Please stay tuned for more information.

CMA submission to the 2019 federal pre-budget consultation

The CMA has put forward its submission to the House of Commons’ Standing Committee on Finance as part of its pre-budget consultations for the upcoming federal budget. Our submission focuses on one core recommendation: new federal funding to the provinces and territories by means of a demographic top-up to the Canada Health Transfer.

As Canada’s demographic shift advances, the challenge of ensuring quality seniors care will only become more daunting unless governments make critical investments in our health care system today. This is a national issue that will affect all provinces and territories. Meanwhile, the current federal health transfer system does not take demographics into account. The CMA’s pre-budget submission proposes that the federal government fund a share of the health care costs associated with our aging population by means of a new “demographic top-up” to the Canada Health Transfer.
