CMA advocacy in response to federal tax proposal affecting incorporation

The CMA continues to be highly active in response to the federal 2016 budget proposal to alter access to the small business deduction. Finance Canada has confirmed that incorporated physicians in partnership group medical structures will be affected. The CMA is proactively meeting with elected officials and political staff to raise awareness of the risks of this proposal and to advocate for group medical structures to be exempted.

From July 29 to September 27, Finance Canada undertook a consultation on the draft legislation that will implement this measure. The CMA facilitated member engagement in the consultation and was copied on over 1,300 submissions to Finance Canada by physicians. The CMA also provided a template submission to facilitate PTMA participation. Following the close of this consultation, legislation will be tabled in the House of Commons and is expected to proceed through the legislative process by the end of the year. The CMA will actively engage in the legislative process to advance the recommendation that physicians be exempted.

Release of The State of Seniors Health Care in Canada report

A new report launched on September 26, 2016 by the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) shows that many seniors are falling through cracks in terms of accessing care and services due to a lack of a national approach and strategy. The report, The State of Seniors Health Care in Canada, demonstrates the need for a pan-Canadian strategy to address the health needs of Canada's growing senior population. (Read more here)

CMA report decries “patchwork” approach to seniors care in Canada

G Avery Canada 2020A new CMA report, The State of Seniors Health Care in Canada, demonstrates the need for a pan-Canadian strategy to address the health needs of Canada’s growing senior population. The CMA has identified seniors care as a top public policy priority for governments in Canada, a call to action supported by over 36,000 Canadians through CMA’s Demand a Plan campaign.

To spur action, the CMA has made several recommendations targeted toward improving seniors care, including increased support for home care and caregivers, as well as increasing provincial and territorial governments’ capacity to respond effectively to the needs of an aging population.

In late September, the CMA also co-hosted a Health Summit to bring together key health care stakeholders and decision-makers to debate implementable solutions in a new Health Accord that will lead to better health outcomes and quality of life – particularly for Canada’s elderly population.

Participants in the summit included:

  • the Honourable Jane Philpott, Minister of Health (watch her presentation);
  • Senator Chantal Petitclerc;
  • Simon Kennedy, Deputy Minister, Health Canada;
  • Michael Decter, Board Chair, Patients Canada; and
  • Fred Horne, Principal, Horne & Associates.

CMA survey

In partnership with Joule, the CMA is preparing to launch the 2016 Baseline survey on Friday, October 7th. The Baseline survey is conducted by CMA every 2 years to measure key performance indicators such as affinity index and net promoter score. In 2016, the Baseline is a joint survey between CMA and Joule that will also include feedback from members on key Joule elements such as product/service feedback. The survey will be distributed to a random sample of 22,000 CMA members (excluding first year students as they’ve only been members for a few weeks). The survey will be in the field until November 4th, 2016. Questions should be directed to yourvoice@cma.ca.
