Tax Fairness: Advocacy Update

The CMA presented to the House of Commons Finance Committee on September 28, during which we emphasized the economic contribution of medical practices, the role of incorporation and why it matters to physicians, and the importance of getting this proposal right. Click here to view our full remarks. The National Finance Committee in the Senate will be holding four weeks of public hearings on the proposed tax changes starting next week, and we anticipate being active throughout these public hearings as well.

The CMA has submitted its technical brief to the department of Finance on Monday, October 2, in which we ask the government to: suspend the current proposals; conduct a comprehensive review of these proposals to ensure that legislation can meet policy objectives without significant unintended consequences; and engage all Canadians in a comprehensive review of the tax system considering the unique aspects of all sectors, including safety net provisions.

Phase two of our advocacy and engagement activities is getting underway, with a new letter-writing tool available on cma.ca. More than 10,000 letters were sent to MPs during the consultation period, and we know that many PTMAs and other small business groups also had similar campaigns underway. Your high level of engagement and advocacy proved invaluable, as the government is under significant pressure. We need to keep the momentum going, and we urge all members to visit the taxation page on cma.ca on Monday October 2 for new messages, a FAQ, and to use the letter-writing tool to send a new letter to MPs.

C-45 presentation on cannabis

The CMA submitted a brief to the Standing Committee on Health for their study of Bill C-45, the Cannabis Act. CMA President Dr. Laurent Marcoux and Dr. Jeff Blackmer, VP of Medical Professionalism, appeared before the committee on September 11 to provide input on the CMA's recommendations. We’re calling for investments in public health education, age restrictions that protect children and youth, a review of legislation within five years and only one regime for medical and non-medical use of cannabis.

Ministers responsible for seniors meeting in Newfoundland

Federal, provincial and territorial ministers responsible for seniors met September 13 in St. John's, Newfoundland. We asked CMA Demand a Plan supporters to send them a letter calling for action on a national seniors plan, and so far, over 34,000 letters have been sent!

Finance Committee begins pre-budget consultations

Public Policy Forum event: Partners in Reconciliation — Recognizing and Respecting

On September 27, the CMA, working with the Public Policy Forum, held a conference in Ottawa focused on reconciliation and strategies for implementing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's health-related calls to action. Speakers covered topics ranging from Healing and the Importance of Reconciliation to Allies in Indigenous Health. New Minister of Indigenous Services, Dr. Jane Philpott, delivered a keynote address; the day also included panel discussions with Dr. Alika Lafontaine and many others.

Media campaign on October 1 for National Seniors Day

The CMA, and our over 51,000 Demand a Plan supporters, continue to call for high quality seniors care in Canada. Together, we leveraged National Seniors Day on October 1 to garner support for our call for a national seniors strategy. During the three-day social and print media blitz (Sept. 29-Oct. 1), we highlighted the need to implement the recommendations outlined in our pre-budget submission.
