CMA reception prior to the health ministers’ meeting

CMA hosted a reception in Toronto in advance of the health ministers’ meeting with the goal of raising awareness of the upcoming Health Accord and the need for seniors care to be front and centre. Federal, Provincial and Territorial health ministers from across the country streamed in and out of the reception. CMA President Dr. Granger Avery, garnered much media attention by Global TV, iPolitics, CTV and the Chronicle Herald, as did Dr. Marcoux, the CMA’s president-elect, with Radio Canada and La Presse. At this event, the CMA also launched released the plan for a new Health Accord, which can be found here.

Dr. Avery was invited by Minister Philpott to attend a stakeholder’s roundtable on the upcoming Health Accord. Health association leaders and organizations around the table included HEAL, CNA, CPhA, HealthCareCan, Patients Canada, CMHA and the Canadian Home Care Association. Minister Philpott began with an explanation of her priorities for a new Health Accord, such as her intention to ensure the Accord would be centered on health priorities, not just finance and money.

CMA advocacy in pre-budget consultations

As pre-budget consultations are underway for the 2017-18 federal budget, the CMA submitted a brief with recommendations on what the budget should include. To support our recommendations and advance our mandate, Dr. Avery and CMA staff have met with various Members of Parliament (MPs) and Senators. Dr. Avery met with Senators Judith Seidman, Kelvin Ogilvie, Elizabeth Marshall, as well as MP Don Davies. Three more meetings are scheduled for the end of November.

In addition, Dr. Avery appeared before the Finance Committee on Oct. 26 to present the CMA’s recommendations for a new Health Accord and succinctly present our brief to committee members, composed of Liberal, Conservative, and NDP MPs.

Health committee appearance

Dr. Jeff Blackmer, Vice-president of Medical Professionalism at the CMA, appeared before the Standing Committee on Health to explain the CMA’s views on Canada’s opioids crisis. The committee has undertaken an emergency study to examine the increasing number of deaths due to opioids, such as fentanyl. CMA staff are continuing to monitor the study and the committee to ensure that we have the most up-to-date information on this issue.

CMA advocacy in response to federal tax proposal affecting incorporation

The CMA continues to be highly active in response to the federal 2016 budget proposal to alter access to the small business deduction. Finance Canada has confirmed that incorporated physicians in partnership group medical structures will be affected. The CMA is proactively meeting with elected officials and political staff to raise awareness of the risks of this proposal and to advocate for group medical structures to be exempted. Recently, Dr. Avery met with the Minister of Science, Kirsty Duncan, to discuss the implications this would have on physicians. The CMA will continue to actively engage in the legislative process to advance the recommendation that physicians be exempted. This recommendation was included in the CMA’s pre-budget submission as well. Meetings with Finance Canada officials are also occurring in the coming days.

DemandaPlan

The CMA launched a 15 question survey in August around seniors care and the new Health Accord.

To date, over 11,200 members of the public have responded. Here is a snapshot of what we have heard:

  • 49% were not aware that the federal government had committed to negotiating a new Health Accord with the provincial and territorial governments.
  • Out of the 5,022 respondents who rated Prescription Drugs as their top priority, 74.3% rated Homecare as either their second or third priority.
  • 68% strongly agreed that the federal government should provide additional funding to provinces and territories based on the aging of their respective populations.

Our Health Care. Our Stories.

Over the past year and half, tens of thousands of Canadians have been advocating for improved seniors care in Canada. During that time, the CMA received hundreds of stories about experiences with our current system, ranging from heart-warming to heart-wrenching experiences.

The CMA has launched a new initiative around seniors care, entitled: Our Health Care. Our Stories. Each week, we’ll be publishing new stories by real Canadians from all walks of life: seniors navigating the system, health care workers witnessing first hand where we need more support, caregivers worried about what the future holds, and others. Anyone can submit a story at this link: http://stories.demandaplan.ca/
