Canadian Medical Association

Several national specialty and special-interest physician organizations are affiliated or associated with the CMA. These collaborative relationships help to strengthen our work by providing specialty-specific input on issues and causes, policies, and initiatives. These relationships respect each organization's autonomy while recognizing the goal of speaking with a common voice for greater issues that affect all physicians.

Recent examples of such collaborations include, but are not limited to, working with:

  • The Association of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Disease Canada on a policy on antimicrobial resistance;
  • The Canadian Geriatrics Society on seniors care; and
  • The Canadian Academy of Sport and Exercise Medicine to update the CMA policy on head injury and sport.

Every spring, the CMA brings together senior staff of the national specialty societies (NSS) and medical organizations — referred to as the NSS CEO Roundtable — to network, identify opportunities for collaboration, and share best practices in association management. While the group is supported by a joint CMA-Royal College secretariat, the meeting agenda is set by an agenda setting committee that is elected by members of the CEO Roundtable. The Royal College supports and hosts the fall meetings of this group.

CMA also meets bilaterally and collectively with national medical organizations such as the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the College of Family Physicians of Canada, the Federation of Medical Regulatory Authorities of Canada and others on issues of mutual interest.
