In 2017, the CMA developed a new strategic plan, CMA 2020, to chart its future and have the greatest impact for physicians and their patients.
This strategy identifies policy and advocacy as the CMA’s core business, with an emphasis on supporting physicians. Achieving success depends on engaging our members to help us build a vibrant profession and a healthy population.
Here are initiatives we have undertaken to support our strategic plan:
Supporting physicians’ health and wellness
- CMA to develop first national analysis of physician wellness supports in Canada
- New funding announced to address specialized physician wellness needs
- $1.6 million announced to fund pan-provincial physician wellness initiative
- National Physician Health Survey released, with detailed data on the health and wellness of Canadian physicians
- International Conference on Physician Health co-hosted by the CMA
- Vice-president of physician health and wellness added to leadership team
A well-defined mandate and a more agile organization
- New governance structure adopted
- Smaller board of directors
- MD Financial Management retains physician-centric model under new Scotiabank ownership
- CMA Investco Inc. created to oversee investment and management of assets from MD Financial Management sale
Continuing our focus on policy and advocacy

- CMA gears up to advance the health agenda during the federal election
- CMA calls for investments in seniors care as Canada’s population ages
Connecting with members

- Regional Member Forums held in four regions, with an online option
- Community engagement platform created as a space for members to connect, engage and inform policy
- Grants to support physician-led communities of interest
