Financial guidance for physicians during COVID-19
The pandemic has disrupted most industries in Canada, including health care. While the pandemic is placing immense demands on health care providers, many physicians and medical learners are also facing financial uncertainty related to loss of income.
The federal government has created several programs to support Canadians facing hardship as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Here’s a summary of the economic measures that could be applicable to you and your medical practice:
Support for employers
A subsidy to cover part of your employee wages if you’ve experienced a drop in revenue due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This subsidy will enable you to re-hire workers, help prevent further job losses and ease you back into normal operations.
This loan program is intended to support businesses by providing financing for their expenses that cannot be avoided or deferred as they take steps to safely navigate a period of shutdown.
This loan program works as a $60,000 line of credit for qualifying businesses.
A subsidy to cover part of your commercial rent or property expenses if you’ve experienced a drop in revenue due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This subsidy provides payments directly to qualifying renters and property owners without requiring the participation of landlords.
Support for individuals
Provides $500 per week for up to 26 weeks to people who have stopped working or had their income reduced by at least 50% due to COVID-19, and who are not eligible for Employment Insurance (EI).
Provides $500 per week for up to 2 weeks to people who are unable to work because they are sick or need to self-isolate due to COVID-19, or have an underlying health condition that puts them at greater risk of getting COVID-19.
Provides $500 per week for up to 26 weeks per household to people who are unable to work because they must care for their child under 12 years old or a family member who needs supervised care.
