About us

Understanding Canada’s health care system can be frustrating. We can help.

Healthcare For Real is an initiative of the Canadian Medical Association to demystify health care to make it better. We’re taking it back to basics with answers to your questions and real talk about the health system. Through videos and articles, we take complex topics and make them clear.

Think of us as your health care-obsessed best friend — the one you text when you're stuck for hours in the emergency department or wondering why it’s so hard to find a family doctor. We’ve done the digging, so you get answers. Our goal is to help you connect the dots.

We’re audience-led, which means we take our editorial lead from you and what you’re curious about.

We believe making sense of health care through context and conversation is the first step to finding solutions together.

How many hours do doctors work?

We are not news or commentary. Nor can we provide personal medical advice — seeing a doctor is always your best bet for that! We provide fully researched information designed to help you figure things out and inspire solutions. Our agenda — to make health care better through clarity, conversation and community.

Everything you see is informed by experts.

We’re all about showing our receipts. You can find details on where we got all our information and notes on any changes at the bottom of each post. We’ll point you to trusted sources on issues outside of our project when your question isn’t something we’re equipped to answer.

Have a health care system related question you’d like us to answer? Got an idea for a topic we haven’t addressed? Or spot a technical error? Contact our editorial team at [email protected] in English or [email protected] en français.

The health care system touches us all. We can make it stronger together. Let’s get into it.
