Canadian Medical Association

Ottawa (ON)/Fredericton (NB), June 25, 2018 – The Canadian Medical Association (CMA) and the New Brunswick Medical Society (NBMS) welcome the launch today of the Healthy Seniors Pilot Projectin Moncton. With New Brunswick having the highest proportion of seniors in Canada, this $75 million initiative represents an opportunity to address and better understand the needs of the aging population in one province. The innovative practices developed through this program will hopefully be scaled up throughout the rest of the country to benefit seniors nationwide.

This new project reflects the fact that Canada's health care system is struggling to meet the needs of our growing seniors' population. Seniors and caregivers know all too well that our system is increasingly being defined by wait times that span the continuum of care – from emergency rooms, to long-term care and home care services, the system is stretched. The CMA continues to emphasize how a national seniors care strategy can deliver much needed change, as recommended by the latest report by the House of Commons Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities (HUMA).

In the meantime, the CMA and the NBMS will be collaborating with the federal and provincial governments to successfully implement this new pilot project and will continue to push for improvements to care for all of Canada's seniors.
