The pandemic has demonstrated the resiliency of health care workers and our system’s ability to adapt, with hospitals reconfiguring and physicians modifying their practices literally overnight. At the same time, it’s exposed significant gaps and left many vulnerable individuals facing even greater challenges.
In my own experience providing palliative care to people experiencing homelessness in Toronto, I’ve seen first-hand how our vulnerable populations can struggle to access care and even the most basic of necessities. In an effort to close some of these gaps, the CMA Foundation recently announced a $10 million donation to the COVID-19 Community Response Fund for Vulnerable Populations, in collaboration with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.
This donation will be distributed to communities across the country and will go toward support services for people experiencing mental health and substance use challenges, community food programs and other community support projects.
