Canadian Medical Association

This article presents guidance and coping strategies for physicians who are subject to bullying and other abusive behaviour. Abuse affects not only the well-being of the targeted individual but, in a health care setting, can also affect patient safety and increase the risk of an adverse event. Physicians who are subject to ongoing abuse may suffer mental health issues and sleep disturbances, and may decide to change workplaces. Knowing how to respond appropriately can help defuse such situations and prevent potential medico-legal difficulties for physicians.
