This position paper describes the origin, structure and basic workings of Brigham and Women’s peer support program, which was redesigned in 2009 to provide on-on-one peer support for physicians who have experienced adverse and emotionally stressful events. The program was one of the first of its kind and more than 25 national and international programs have since used it as a model.
