Mental Health First Aid – First Nations is a course designed for First Nations and anyone who works with First Nations people. Building upon participants’ existing skills in cultural competence, the goal of this course is to encourage participants to have conversations about mental wellness by reflecting on life experiences, the colonization of Turtle Island and ways to ensure a balanced journey toward mental wellness. The EAGLE model provides a framework for helping someone through a mental health crisis: engage and evaluate the risk of suicide or harm, assist the person to seek professional help, give reassurance and information, listen without judgment, and encourage self-help strategies and gather community supports. The course can be delivered via various modalities, including in a First Nations community, within an organization or remotely.
