Shkaabe Makwa is the first hospital-based centre in Canada that is dedicated to health justice and wellness initiatives for First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities. The centre emphasizes a two-eyed seeing lens, combining traditional ways of knowing with medical knowledge. Initiatives and goals include research advancement, workforce development and healing innovation. Shkaabe Makwa translates to “Spirit Bear Helper,” which reflects the centre’s dedication to healing, medicine and seeking guidance from the Spirit World. Shkaabe Makwa's website features self-directed online courses, a “Knowledge Nest” of resources for Indigenous care providers, and a “Digital Wellness Bundle” for Indigenous workers.
