Dr. MacDonald was born, raised and educated in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He graduated from the Dalhousie University School of Medicine in 1978 and completed his residency in obstetrics-gynecology in 1985. He worked as a consultant in obstetrics and gynecology in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, from 1985 to 1987, and in Moncton, New Brunswick, from 1988 to 1989. He moved to Charlottetown, PEI, in 1989, where he still resides.
Dr. MacDonald has served on the board of directors and various committees of the Medical Society of Prince Edward Island. Before joining the CMA Board of Directors, he served as a member of the CMA Committee on Health Policy and Economics, which he also chaired for one year.
