On May 26, leading experts from Quebec’s health network discussed how to rethink the health system to create value during a Health Summit session hosted by l’Université de Montréal’s H-pod.

Panellists included Dr. Abdo Shabah, emergency physician and CMA board member, Joanne Castonguay, Health and Welfare Commissioner, Dr. Lucie Opatrny, Assistant Deputy Minister for Quebec’s MSSS Direction des affaires universitaires, médicales, infirmières et pharmaceutiques, and Edith Lambert, a family caregiver with lived experience.

The webinar was hosted by Jean-Louis Denis, Professor of Health Management and Policy at l’École de santé publique de l’Université de Montréal (ESPUM) and co-director of H-pod.

Five key takeaways from the session are to:

Change our perspective for better patient care

“The concept of value can be summed up like this: efficiency and effectiveness, equity and innovation. We can never forget that the fundamental equation we must abide by is the ratio of costs to results.” — Jean-Louis Denis, Health Summit panellist

Invite new players to the table and give voice to marginalized groups and individuals

“When caregivers are talking, we should be listened to. We’re with the person 24 hours a day; we see things that don’t necessarily happen in the doctor’s office.” — Edith Lambert, Health Summit panellist

Develop effective community-based care

“When we assess our health system’s performance, we must consider whether the health of the population is improving. And because this is a public system, we must optimize how we use our resources.” — Joanne Castonguay, Health Summit panellist

Foster innovation

“Innovation isn’t always an invention—we can make small changes that will have a big impact on the system.” — Dr. Abdo Shabah, Health Summit panellist

Secure solid data for decision-making

“The important thing is to measure and compare ourselves so that we can identify, work on and monitor gaps and improvements.” — Dr. Lucie Opatrny, Health Summit panellist
