Key statement

Mother of a child with type 1 diabetes, supporter of and advocate for people with mental health challenges and addictions, advocate for patient values and patient feedback, licensed practical nurse (LPN) by trade and type 1 diabetes educator by passion.

Lived experience

Mother of a young child with type 1 diabetes whose voice was disregarded at several points in her daughter’s diagnostic journey, even though she was a nurse and strong advocate, resulting in her child coming very close to death because of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). Parent who feels that if she had not had the strength and confidence to persevere to be heard, her family story would look different.

Key areas of interest in advocacy

Collaborative care between health care providers, patients and families for optimal treatment plans. Empowerment of patients to feel heard, cared for and confident in the quality of their care.

What I hope to bring to the Patient Voice

Passion about equal rights and patients’ need to be heard. Desire to ensure that health care providers meaningfully understand patients’ values to improve their health on all levels: physical health, emotional health and overall well-being.
