Physician Burnout, Interrupted
June 25, 2020 New England Journal of Medicine
This article by Dr. Hartzband and Dr. Groopman in the New England Journal of Medicine references the work of Gagné and Deci on the intrinsic and extrinsic motivators in the workplace. The researchers state that tangible extrinsic motivators can lead to “amotivation” (burnout). Intrinsic motivators and psychological well-being are supported by autonomy, competence and relatedness.
