Canadian Medical Association

This article presents the findings from a 56-item survey that assessed the support needs of medical professionals and proposed a design for an evidence-based intervention to address them. Residents and attending physicians at a large tertiary care academic hospital were asked about their likelihood of seeking support, perceived barriers, awareness of available services, sources of support and experience with stress. The study found peer support was the most widely acceptable source of physician support. Based on the results, it is recommended that one-on-one peer support programs be implemented to address the stressful experiences and desire for support among physicians.
